Highlights of the Milan Menswear Shows FW 2016

Just as we reach the point in winter when all we want is warm weather and to wear light clothing, the fashion industry jumps ahead to next fall, forcing us to consider what we will wear when it gets cold all over again. Despite our desire to wear shorts and go to the beach this coming summer, the start of Menswear week in Milan has revived our commitment to cold weather fashion. Here are our favorite highlights from the Italian shows in hopes that it will offer some fresh ideas about what to wear this winter for you too.

MARNI

Marni

Our favorite collection by far during Milan Menswear Shows was Marni. Not usually a collection we favor for men, the fall 2016 collection was outstanding. Impeccably structured coats, oversized shirts and sweaters, and the perfect trousers… Marni created a collection that was the perfect combination of minimalism and modern design, accessible for the most fashion-forward man as well as the more traditional dresser.

GUCCI

Gucci

In contrast to Marni’s approach, was Gucci, in almost every regard. Only the brave will want to wear the color and pattern schemes of Gucci’s menswear this fall, but there has to be something for the most risk-taking. And this collection is perfect for that sort of man, it’s very rockstar circa the 1960s.

MSGM

Something in between these things was the collection by MSGM. The designs featured long coats, slouchy trousers, and touches of color that are slightly more accessible than Gucci, but still not looks everybody will appreciate. Reserved still more for the more adventurous dresser, it would still be a fun addition for a winter wardrobe that is feeling a bit bleak.

PRADA

Prada

The traditional man won’t shy away from the looks of Prada, well at least most of them. The collection was all sleek coats, high-water slim pants, and predictable Prada prints and dark colors. It’s clothing that speaks before a man can speak.

ZEGNA & ETRO

Zegna_Etro

Not far from the concept of Prada are two separate brands, Etro and Zegna. Our favorite looks from both of these collections featured turtlenecks under straight-line coats, slim trousers, and just a touch of texture or color to add an element of interest to an otherwise minimalistic approach to dressing. For the man who is serious about what he is wearing.

FENDI & GIORGIO ARMANI

The looks from Fendi & Giorgio Armani were almost from another era. The oversized suits and fur coats were 1920s mafia boss with a touch of modern femininity. Not every man will feel comfortable in a fur coat, but there are definitely elements from each of these looks that should be considered when approaching fashion next fall…. trying out an oversized suit or adding some plaid prints to your wardrobe, if nothing else.

JIL SANDER & NO. 21

Jil_No

Also from another era, but definitely not the 1920s, were the looks of Jil Sander & No. 21. They were partly 80s and partly military. Jil Sander played with oversized shoulders, straps, and varying shades of army green while we liked the way No. 21 used naval blues and extra large canvas hoodies.
