WEEKEND EATS: Sushi Azabu

When you are in the mood for Edo-mae style sushi, there is no need to catch a flight to Japan anymore. New York’s own Sushi Azabu is one of the only restaurants in the United States that actually serves traditional Edo-mae sushi, a centuries old tradition based on ‘beauty, simplicity, and excellence.’ Tucked away in the basement of a multi-ethnic restaurant called Greenwich Grill, Sushi Azabu is Tribeca’s special little Japanese secret.

It becomes quickly evident that everything in Sushi Azabu seems to have come from Japan. The restaurant even imports 80% of its fish from Japan 4 times per week. Sushi Azabu’s Ikura Nigiri will entice even the most skeptical of critics.

“A traditional Ikura Nigiri is transformed to a mouthwatering sushi dish with the simple addition of the silky, smooth quail egg yolk. As the Ikura pops in the mouth, the yolk enhances taste by adding more flavors to the total experience.” -Sushi Azabu

The life and training of Edo-mae chefs is taken very seriously at Sushi Azabu. In fact, all of their chefs are of Japanese origin and are trained only in Japan. They are considered true sushi artists in their industry and believe there is a true attitude and philosophy behind authentic Edo-mae sushi.

Sushi Azabu’s interior will truly make you feel like you’ve traveled to Tokyo. With its river stone floors, bamboo ceilings, and rich red walls wallpapered with traditional paper from (you guessed it) Japan, you will truly feel relaxed and ready to experience true Edo-mae sushi.

Sushi Azabu has an extensive wine list and fully stocked bar to go along with their homemade soy sauce and rare Japanese fish. Reservations can be made up to a month in advance and are suggested to be made at least two weeks prior to your dining date. Make your reservation today to try some exquisite Edo-mae sushi right here in New York City.
