EATS: Houseman Restaurant Opens in Tribeca

After receiving his BA from Yale, Ned Baldwin took his talent for art from the sculptor studio to the kitchen. Working as the creative chef at Prune’s in Manhattan, Baldwin became a well-known chef and made the acquaintance of Adam Baumgart. The duo are now the chefs behind the newest, must try restaurant in Tribeca, Houseman Restaurant, preparing food that is “pretty but unfussy.” Food that they, themselves would like to eat.

Houseman which is translated from the word husmanskost, means “everyday food” in Swedish. The plan at Houseman is to offer everyday food to their neighborhood diners. Fresh vegetables and fish from local Long Islands farms and fisheries will be served on their daily changing menu. Baldwin and Baumgart plan for Houseman to become a neighborhood favorite where repeat clientele can dine often.

Louis Yoh designed the interior of Houseman’s space with simplicity in mind. There are two exposed brick walls that are ‘very old,’ schoolhouse chairs, tables that are repurposed bowling alley lanes, a zinc bar, and an open kitchen. Houseman seats up to 60 people so reservations are not a must, but suggested. Their hours of operation are 7-11pm, 7 days a week and come September, Houseman has plans to introduce lunch hours to their clientele.

Looking for a home cooked meal with a twist, Houseman is what’s on the menu. Bon Appetit!
