September means New York Fashion Week, the reveal of next spring’s hottest trends, and the designers that bring these looks to life. While leading houses are sure to bring plenty to the table, these young, up-and-coming creators make our list of designers to watch.
ALEXANDER WANG
If technology and innovation represent the spirit of our times, Alexander Wang could be our official mascot. Known for his urban influences, and emphasis on innovative textiles, Wang’s strong silhouettes, paired with a sparing use of color distinguish the 31-year-old’s designs from his contemporaries.
With his menswear shown in Paris and his womenswear shown in New York, the distance between the two shows is usually reflected in how unique each collection is from the other. Whether it’s heat-sensitive leather, or mesh bonded to nylon, Wang is sure to show us something that demands a closer look.
PHILLIP LIM
Phillip Lim’s aesthetic is luxuriously elegant, with a touch of eccentricity. A re-inventor of traditional pieces, Lim’s textile choices give new life to classic looks through unique silhouettes, draping and unexpected color.
Lim’s SS/15 menswear collection took elements of traditional suiting, and mixed them with sports influences, just the type of contrast-play Lim is known for. With a definite cohesiveness existing between his collections, his oversized pinstripes and plaid-on-plaid could hint at what we will see at his womens’ show in the coming days.
PRABAL GURUNG
Gurung‘s combination of rich jacquards, prints, and textures give his work a uniquely feminine grace that few other designers can emulate.
While his use of color can be bold, and his fabrics make a statement, Gurung finds success in creating approachable, wearable clothing. From dressing Michelle Obama, to Lady Gaga, Gurung’s diverse appeal is outmatched only by the versatility of his designs themselves.
SKINGRAFT
Skingraft is an emerging label from former circus performer and costume designer Jonny Cota. While some might call New York Fashion Week a circus, Cota’s sleek designs, penchant for leather, and sophisticated knits are anything but.
With a following among performers like Usher, Nicki Minaj and A$AP Rocky, along with booming success at their LA-based flagship store, this line has edge, sex appeal, and a future to match their favorite accent color, gold.
ALON LIVNÉ
Just when you think you’ve got this designer figured out, as dark, deco-influenced elegance with a nod to the 80’s, he surprises you with angular, neon accented cut-outs and structure.
Having trained at Alexander McQueen in London, with a stint in couture at Cavalli, this Israel-born designer is not messing around when it comes to creating unforgettable garments, of the highest quality.
