There are two kinds of epicureans, those that worship sushi and those that don’t (there’s no middle ground when it comes to raw fish). This story is not just for those that love sushi, it’s for those that consider it one of life’s greatest pleasures.
Is there any simpler food than sushi? It really is just a few ingredients… rice, raw fish, and a few garnishments (for the sake of the purist sushi connoisseur let’s forget about those crazy, over-the-top rolls). It’s as nude and vulnerable as any food can be. If even one ingredient is off— a not so fresh or quality piece of fish, improperly cooked rice, or an ill-constructed presentation— it not only ruins the entire dish, it destroys the whole sushi experience. That’s why it’s vital to find the perfect place to enjoy this kind of cuisine, and that’s where Yojisan Sushi comes in.
Here is a restaurant where fine taste reigns. Chef Yoji Tajima ensures the menu is modern enough to vie for a place in the Los Angeles scene— offering contemporary dishes such as the Blue Fin Buratta and Uni with Truffle (both dishes are must orders in our book). But, he also caters to those that just want pure, delicious sushi. All that’s required is superbly sourced fish, a knife, and an expert sushi chef wielding the blade. When these elements combine (simple, yes, but rare nonetheless) the result is total bliss!
It doesn’t end there, however. Dining is sensorial in all meanings of the word. It can’t only begin and end with the cuisine, and experienced restauranteur Giaomino Drago knew this when he created the space for Yojishan Sushi on Beverly Dr. In 2013 he was rewarded for his investment in its architecture by receiving one of a few nominations for the Restaurant Design People’s Choice Award by the American Institute of Architects. We have to say, the clean and utterly contemporary composition of the space is as much a part of the experience as the dining. The whole occasion is as artistic as it is palatable.
If at this point you’re still wondering if you are a sushi gastronome, we have a test for you to try. Got to Yojishan sushi and ask the chef to give you his favorite fish of the day. See what happens next… Do you close your eyes as you experience the tingling of flavors on your lips and tongue? If the answer is yes, now you know you’re a sushi-phile. Welcome to the club.
